Safer pressure regulation with the right venting option

When little or no flow is present downstream of a pressure regulator, the outlet pressure cannot always be reduced effectively. The appropriate venting option provides the safety and control needed in these operating conditions.

Under normal operating conditions, turning the regulator handle reduces the force on the compression spring and lowers the outlet pressure. However, if no medium is flowing on the consumption side, the outlet pressure cannot be reduced further. In this situation, the downstream side must be vented in a controlled manner.

This can be achieved either by installing a separate vent valve or, more conveniently, by using a pressure regulator with an integrated venting function.

OPEN SELF-VENTING OPTION (FIGURE 1)

Harmless gases can be vented safely from the spring housing to the surrounding atmosphere through a vent hole located below the handle.

Advantage: A simple and cost-effective solution for non-hazardous media.

CLOSED SELF-VENTING OPTION (FIGURE 2)

Liquids or toxic media can be routed into a closed venting system, where they can be safely collected, properly disposed of, or returned to the process.

Advantage: Maximum safety for hazardous, toxic, or valuable media.

CLOSED EMERGENCY-VENTING OPTION (FIGURE 3)

Pressure regulators with a closed spring housing include lateral vent ports for additional protection. In the event of a diaphragm rupture or piston malfunction, escaping media can be directed away in a controlled manner.

Advantage: Enhanced protection for personnel, equipment, and the environment.
